Windows & Stained Glass
Colorless is preferred over the term “clear” or “white” glass since the former term refers more accurately to the transparency of the glass not its color, i. Colorless glass was a goal of glass manufacturers for centuries and was difficult to produce because it required the use of virtually impurity-free materials. Venetian glass makers produced their crystallo as early as the 15th century and glass makers in 18th century England made what was known as “flint” glass from virtually pure quartz rock calcined flint which was simply called “flint” Hunter Improved chemistry and glass making methods of the late 19th and early 20th century allowed for process efficiencies that made colorless glass easier and much cheaper to produce with the use of various additives in the glass mixture.

Contact Introduction There are many good reasons for the student to study the history of stained glass; first, to truly excel, the student should be aware of the romance of the medium. Second, an appreciation of the history of stained glass will foster a dispassionate, critical approach in the student when appraising stained glass. The student of stained glass is urged to approach the medium with an informed, non-prejudiced understanding of the various styles to be encountered.
There are many excellent resources available for the study of stained glass and the student is urged to acquire a library of reference books that illustrate and describe specific installations in detail. However, there is no substitute for actually viewing stained glass in situ; that is, in its architectural surroundings. A comprehensive bibliography follows this chapter. Because this volume is intended as a reference of techniques for the stained glass artist and not as a history of the craft, this chapter should serve only as a starting point for the student who wishes to develop a deeper appreciation of the history of craft.
It should also be noted that there are many periods that are imperfectly documented. None of those studios exist today, and little is known about them. The legend recounts shipwrecked sailors who set their cooking pots on blocks of natron soda from their cargo then built a fire under it on the beach.

How to Identify Antique Lighting Fixtures
Appearance[ edit ] The normal colour of uranium glass ranges from yellow to green depending on the oxidation state and concentration of the metal ions, although this may be altered by the addition of other elements as glass colorants. Uranium glass also fluoresces bright green under ultraviolet light and can register above background radiation on a sufficiently sensitive Geiger counter , although most pieces of uranium glass are considered to be harmless and only negligibly radioactive.
Specialized collectors still define vaseline glass as transparent or semi-transparent uranium glass in this specific color. Vaseline glass is now used as a synonym for any uranium glass, especially in the United States, but this usage is not universal. The term is sometimes carelessly applied to other types of glass based on certain aspects of their superficial appearance in normal light, regardless of actual uranium content which requires a blacklight test to verify the characteristic green fluorescence.
In the United Kingdom and Australia , the term vaseline glass can be used to refer to any type of translucent glass.

Posted on June 20, 8 Comments I have a small, but interesting, collection of antique stained glass which I have collected over the last thirty years. Although amounting to only seven pieces five windows, a chandelier and a lamp , the collection is eclectic and each piece has a history. For example, as I will explain, the chandelier and one window go together even though they were bought about 25 years apart. Just like my earlier post on the decay of post offices, railroad stations and light houses see Going Postal , antique American stained glass suffers from neglect, urban renewal or urban removal, as I call it and changing modern tastes.
The mid th century modernistic movement was a direct attack on all things ornate — whether Victorian, Art Deco or Art Nouveau. As a result, many wonderful pieces of antique stained glass found their way to the garbage heap. Fortunately, pickers, collectors and preservers managed to keep others from destruction. One of the first pieces I collected came from the aptly named Thieves Market in Alexandria, Virginia.
When Thieves Market closed for business, they sold the stained glass hanging above their auction floor, among them two pieces from a Victorian house dating from the late 19th century in Northeast Washington, DC. Here is some of the detail from one of the windows: The dealer said the windows were from a house in Cincinnati in the early 20th century and mentioned Third Street Studios.

Curtain material and furniture around and a book and a vase of flowers too. Jesus is holding a small flower. An open area with a few small trees in the back ground. Around this main painted glass centre are 12 other smaller bits of glass in blue and a reddy orange in the conrers…. And I can hear the glass rattling within the leaded strips.
Two small iron hooks at the top of the panel allow it to be hung up. This frame is rather nice with stained wood and has a small tin metal candle holder at one side.
STAINED GLASS To understand the nature of this art one needs to consider the material components of the stained-glass window and the various ways in which these are assembled; the architectural factors that govern the luminosity of stained glass and the resources of the medium for exploiting different degrees of luminosity; and the reasons for the singularly entrancing effect of 12th-and 13th-century stained glass. From the time of its origin to the present day the art of stained glass has undergone an interesting evolution.

Reconstruction Subject matter In the Middle Ages ecclesiastical art was primarily didactic. The subjects painted in the windows played an important part in the expounding of the Scriptures and the glorification of the church and its saints. The iconographic program of medieval stained-glass windows for ecclesiastical buildings is a product of several factors. To begin with, the cruciform plan of the churches themselves created four focal areas.
Each area, by its architectural form and orientation to the sun, tended to elicit the development of certain subjects or types of subject. In Chartres, for example, the five central windows of the choir clerestory and the north rose window are consecrated to the Virgin, the south rose window to the glorification of Christ, and the west rose window to the Last Judgment. In Bourges Cathedral the huge figures of the Apostles in the south clerestory are paired off against the prophets in the north clerestory, the representatives of the New Testament thereby receiving the full light of the sun and their Old Testament counterparts the more crepuscular light of the north sky.
